ETC's wrist/digital sensor features a miniaturized design based on a piezo-electric sensor and proprietary pulsation-exteriorization as well as electronic filtering and amplification techniques. The device communicates wirelessly with PC-based computers using the Bluetooth protocol

The device’s signal quality is sufficiently high as to allow detailed contour analysis of the radial or digital pulse shape, which is influenced by factors such as systolic and diastolic blood pressure, arterial distensibility and the pressure impedance effects of artery/arteriole interfaces. Specifically, it makes the resolution of the component pulse structure of the radial/digital pulse envelope possible. The first of these pulses, indicated by a blue arrow, is due to the left ventricular ejection while the second pulse is the well-known  “second systolic” peak. In the graphs above (black arrow, top graph) is it clearly resolvable in the radial pulse spectrum of a 42 year old male as well as, though more pronounced, in the radial pulse spectrum of a 59 year-old male. Notice also another distinct pulse (red arrows) that temporally follows the “second systolic” peak. For reasons that are explained on the next pages a more sensible labeling of these two peaks, which follow the primary pulse (blue arrows above) due to left ventricular ejection, is “renal reflection” and “iliac reflection”.

By tracking the relative temporal and amplitudinal relationship of the component pulses it is possible to perform blood pressure measurements as well as vascular health assessments.
